Sintra, famed for its stunning romantic architecture and lush landscapes, is an alluring destination that is just a short train ride from Lisbon. This charming town has captivated the hearts of travelers with its fairytale-like castles and palaces. A day trip to Sintra offers an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of the capital city, allowing for a day filled with exploration, culture, and delicious food.

Must-See Attractions in Sintra

There are numerous enchanting places to visit in Sintra. One of the most iconic landmarks is the Pena Palace, a whimsical castle that stands proudly atop a hill. This colorful palace is a blend of Gothic, Moorish, and Renaissance architectural styles, making it a must-see for visitors. After exploring the palace, take a stroll in the surrounding park, which features ancient trees and stunning vistas.

Another highlight during a day trip to Sintra is the Moorish Castle. With its impressive stone walls and towers, this historic fortress offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It's a great spot to capture memorable photos.

Don't miss the Quinta da Regaleira, an estate shrouded in mystery and legends. The gardens are filled with hidden tunnels, grottoes, and a striking Initiation Well, which adds to the magical experience of the property.

Delicious Dining Options

After a day of exploring, you will want to indulge in some of Sintra's culinary delights. One must-try dish is the local pastry known as Travesseiro, a puff pastry filled with almond cream: A sweet treat that you can't afford to miss. I got this from a local and can definitely recommend is a pastry shop called 'Casa Piriquita'.

To make the most of your day trip to Sintra from Lisbon, it's essential to plan your itinerary. The train ride from Lisbon to Sintra is easy and takes approximately 40 minutes. Trains run regularly throughout the day, so you can choose a time that suits your schedule. I could also recommend taking an Uber as they are not that expensive. We paid approx. 20 EUR for an Uber from Lisbon central to Sintra, and they take your right to the top.

Consider arriving early to beat the crowds, especially during the summer months. Give yourself enough time to explore each attraction and take leisurely breaks.
